The Book of Mormon

Posted by: Jeff   in About Me, Religion

A friend of mine, Chris Haleua,  put up a website/blog at http://www.bookofmormontruth.com/, and I thought I would contribute by sharing my feelings on the Book of Mormon…  I’ve copied below what I sent to him to post on his new page.  As a side note, I think it’s important to put good information out there when you see a lot of falsehoods taking up the bandwidth - this goes for anything religious, social, whatever!  Use the internet for sharing good rather than for spewing hate…  That’s my goal!

I guess I should start by saying that I didn’t always believe the Book of Mormon to be true…  My Father is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) and my Mother is a Presbyterian.  I grew up going to church with my Dad, but I spent a fair amount of time once I really began thinking about my faith wondering whether or not any of the stuff I was being told was true.  It’s a little fantastic to think, isn’t it?  A boy named Joseph Smith seeing God the Father and Jesus Christ, then being instructed some years later to translate a story of people here in the Americas and their religious experiences…  You have to admit, it’s kind of hard at first glance to believe that a story like that could be true.

My testimony is that it IS true.  When I was in high school I decided that it was time for me to figure out whether or not this book really was what everyone told me it was.  I grew up in the Chicago-land area, so I had my church friends telling me it was true and my school friends telling me it was written by Satan.  The only way I could think of to prove it one way or another was to read it and to pray about it-trusting that God would never lead me astray if I were to pray in full faith, asking for enlightenment.  (Remember John 11:22 - “But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.”)

When I read the Book of Mormon, I felt a great peace and sense of faith come over me.  Knowing my Bible pretty decently, I thought of the scripture Galatians 5:22-23 - “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”  At that point I knew something was right.

After reading I would pray and ask if the book and its words are true, and I would always feel at peace, filled with love, and with a desire to continue reading more.  After consistently feeling that way for an extended period of time, I knew I was doing something right.  I continued in the Book of Mormon until I had completed it.  In the final chapter, the prophet Moroni promises the following (Moroni 10:3-5):

3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.

4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

I had been praying all along, but at this point I knelt down and asked one more time if the Book of Mormon is true, and I can testify that it is!

The Book of Mormon has been a strength to me throughout my life.  At times I struggle with the complexities of life, and I realized a long time ago that the teachings in Ecclesiastes are true, and that a life filled with good things is still empty and futile if it is without God.  When I read in the Book of Mormon (and the Bible for that matter), I feel the Spirit of God in my life and I can make it through the hardest trials and feel the greatest joys when things seem to be going my way.  One of my favorite Book of Mormon scriptures is found in Helaman chapter 5, when the prophet Helaman spoke to his sons, saying in verse 12:

“And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.”

As an LDS Missionary I saw the Book of Mormon change people’s lives.  These weren’t simply non-believers that finally found Christ, but devout Catholics, Baptists and Jehovah’s Witnesses that began reading the Book of Mormon and discovering the truth of it for themselves.  The teachings in the Book of Mormon drive us to become better disciples of Jesus Christ, and that was the challenge that each of these converts took upon themselves.

I know that the Book of Mormon is true, and it has changed my life and made me a better man.  Alongside the Bible, the Book of Mormon helps us understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ more clearly.  If you’re curious for yourself, take the time to validate the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon for yourself!

As always, communication on anything I write about it appreciated and welcome.  Just post a comment, and if you ask a question I will respond.

Valentine’s Day Vol. 2

   Posted by: Jeff   in Holidays

So, since I’m in a writing mood today I suppose I will go ahead and add in the update on the remainder of Valentine’s Day goodness.  I never really got pictures of the stuff at Color Me Mine, so I apologize for that…  You’ll also miss out on pictures of the Gumby figure that Lauren got me and the amazingly scary cover for the “Are You Afraid of the Dark” DVDs I got for Lauren.  Can you tell we’re pretty silly sometimes?

Dancing Time

We finally have proof that we’re dating since we took a couple pictures together, so that’s  a major success for the Holiday…  And for some reason, my shirt looks kind of shiny in the above picture, but I promise you it’s a magical eye trick - there is no true shininess to that shirt.

The main excitement for our date was the excellent present that Lauren envisioned, designed, and  fabricated for me: The Adventures of Jeff RosenbaughThe Adventures of Jeff Rosenbaugh

I have to say I was pretty excited to tear through the gloriousness that is my first Biography about me…  Here are some quick page shots:

Jeff Book 02

Jeff Book 03

Jeff Book 04

Anyway, there’s a flavor of the good ol’ kiddiness of a book about Jeff!  :)  I thought it was one of the cutest things that I have seen…  Pretty darn impressed!  I think she matched me point for point on gifts, don’t you?  :)

Pyxlin

Posted by: Jeff   in Cool Technology, Hobbies

I may have a new favorite online service: Pyxlin… I saw this in the Daily Universe (BYU’s Student newspaper) yesterday, and since I have been an avid Journaler over the last 8 months (though I’ve been pretty bad at it recently) I thought I would check it out. Seriously, I’m pretty highly impressed!!! Pyxlin isn’t a terribly new idea in it’s basic form - it’s an online Journal tool - but it’s a service that finally does things right.

The biggest downfalls I’ve seen to previous services like this have been that they don’t provide all the functionality I want in their web service (a full text editor and the ability to upload my photos however I want) nor do they provide much of a way for you to get a hardbound copy of what you have worked so diligently to keep… Well, those are two things that Pyxlin definitely gets right! Keeping an online journal sure is convenient since you can access it from anywhere and flake out during class if you’d like, but finally I can get my journal in a book at the end of the year to keep on my book shelf.

I like to see when people do technology the right way… Too often people try and digitize your whole life, but for the majority of us there is a strong feeling of nostalgia for the things of the past… I LOVE having hard copies of my journals. Can I tell you how much I love that? I LOOOOVE having hard copies of my journals. It’s nice to pull it out once in a while to see what I was feeling and thinking about a while back… It’s really great if you want to share some personal thoughts that you wrote about your girlfriend when you first started dating… Seriously, it’s a big deal to me, and to see someone respond to that type of user requirement (I know I’m not the only one who feels this way) is really impressive.

Pyxlin Journals

I recommend you check it out and take a look at a pretty neat product. I don’t know anything about the guys who developed it, other than that they were/are apparently BYU students - thus why the Daily Universe covered it, so I don’t want anyone to think I’m recommending you check out something a friend built (though you should definitely check out RateMyApartments.com).

There is a site charge (something like $20 a year if you pay annually), but you can do a 7-day trial for free. Let me know what you think! I get excited about people using technology intelligently like this - it’s a big step up from the non-innovative ideas I often see.

Valentine’s Day Vol. 1

Posted by: Jeff   in Hobbies, Holidays

So, it’s not titled Vol. 1 because it’s my first Valentine’s Day, nor is it my first Valentine’s Day with a girlfriend, but it’s titled Vol. 1 because I have a feeling there will be a couple posts with multiple pictures.  :)  I did pretty well for myself this year in gift preperation, and it sounds like Lauren did as well - so why not share some pictures and such displaying our talents?  :)

So, the big gift from me this year is a big ol’ blanket.  Seriously, they’re pretty simple to make, though relatively time consuming.  All you do is pick out some felt (or something softer) at your local fabric shop and then follow the directions!

1. Purchase approximately  2 1/2 yards of fabric.  I hate throw blankets because they’re always too short, so if you’re making your own make sure it’s nice and long!  Also, the blanket will be more fun if you buy two different patterns/colors and tie them together.  It’s also warmer, and it allows you to have felt on one side (usually where you have a fun pattern) and something softer on the other side like fleece.

2.  Line up the fabric so that both pieces are overlapping well and then cut slits about an inch thick, and long enough so that you can tie the fabric together.  One tip is to make sure you take into account which sides of the fabric are stretchy…  You won’t need to cut strips quite as long on the long edge of your blanket, thus not sacrificing overall width.  The corners can be tricky but you can either cut a square off the corner of try to do a diagonal tie at each corner.  Either way works.

Tied Corner

3. Make loop ties, tying the strips from both pieces of fabric together.  It’s pretty simple - you make a loop and stick the ends through the loop and pull…  ’nuff said.

4. Once you’ve tied all the strips together going around the blanket, cut the ties so that they are even going all the way around.  You probably won’t do this perfectly, but that’s OK.  Just cute the ends so that the strips from each piece of fabric end up being even.

Cutting ties

And you’re done!  It’s really a pretty simple process, but it’s fun to make and I don’t know a single girl who hasn’t gone “awwwwwwww….” when their manfriend has made one and given it to them.  I know I won some pretty good points this Valentine’s Day!  haha…

Anyway, I should take some pictures of stuff that we made at Color Me Mine last week.  And apparently Lauren is finishing up something pretty neat, so maybe I’ll take some pictures and post those as well.  I kinda like spoiling people, so Valentine’s Day with a womanfriend is always a good time of year.  :)

Updates and Summer Plans

Posted by: Jeff   in Personal Thoughts

There is a lot going on I suppose. Maybe not, but it kind of feels like it!

I officially accepted my offer with ExxonMobil on Monday of this last week! I’m pretty excited, but I’m not planning on moving out there until the beginning of September… I look forward to a really great summer, but I can’t lie and say that I’m not antsy already. I’m ready to graduate and get out of school, that’s for sure! Perhaps when I’m just working I will feel a little differently.

Speaking of school, it’s been close to impossible to motivate myself to get my homework done. Seriously, it feels like my Senior year at Prairie Ridge all over again! I hated being that trunky back in the day, but I’m falling into that trap all over again… Homework is the real killer. I can do a great job of paying attention and attending class, but getting stuff done after work hours is NOT something I have a lot of motivation to do right now.

As for my summer plans, seeing as how I won’t be in Houston until September, I plan on working in the Project Management office here at BYU for those summer months. I’ve talked with Ernie and he is totally OK with me doing that - in fact he encouraged it a little bit since he wants me married by the time I end up leaving… I can’t say I don’t want the same, but I thought it was pretty funny.

So, I really don’t have anything specific to write about other than that I’m pretty happy and things are going well! I’ll probably post some pictures of Lauren and I at some point (yes, we’re still dating), but we need to actually take pictures for once if that’s gonna happen. I guess I forget that auxilliery stuff sometimes. Haha!

By the way, I’m writing this post from my BlackBerry Pearl! How cool is that? I’m pretty certain Jason is jealous…
