Resolve to Post?

Posted by: Jeff   in About Me, Hobbies, Personal Thoughts

Yes…

New Year’s Resolution: Blog more frequently so that Jason doesn’t have to pester me into doing it…  Not that Jason’s pestering isn’t welcome, because that’s how I remember to do most things, but I should be better at doing it on my own…

As for a life update:

  • I work at ExxonMobil and I love it.
  • I’m still single and working on it.
  • I still enjoy movies, literature, video games and the occasional comic book (though I admit I don’t read comics or play games as much as I used to, which is probably entirely appropriate).
  • I bought an iPod Nano and a Nike+ with my Safety Money I received for surviving a quarter at the largest refinery in the United States - thus I’m hoping somethinge encourages me to run (please Nike!!!).
  • I’m throwing a New Year’s Eve party.
  • I’m still sexy.
  • I still think the best movie line ever is, “Come with me if you want to live…”  Actually, I really just think it’s the most believable line that MUST BE ADHERED TO, even in real life.
  • Travis is getting married on January 17th and it’s the best/worst/greatest news ever.  Only worst because it means I have to get spousal approval to kidnap him now…  And him visiting me in Houston became a tiny bit harder.
  • I make the greatest Gingerbread known to man.
That’s the update…  Oh, and I think you should all watch the following:

The End!

Blog Needs Updating

Posted by: Jeff   in Hobbies, Personal Thoughts

So, before I start my really cool blog postings that I have had a bunch of time to think about, I really need to develop my own WordPress theme.  I have a really cool idea in mind, but I can’t get the internet to play nice and work with me, nor do I have the patience to learn how to develop said WordPress theme.  That, my friends, is a very subtle hint that I need some encouragement…

I may even rename the blog, give it a sexy new title.  That will be the major secret of the unveiling of whatever theme I develop.

Anyway, I’ve gotta get back to work on figuring out how to grab stuff off my TiVo and make it edit happy on the Mac.  I may or may not have to pirate software to figure it out…  (Don’t worry, if I find a solution I like I will pay for it, but I don’t wanna blow a ton of money on something I end up hating.)

If you have any good tips on theme creation, offer some support - jeff at rosenbaugh dot com.

I am Mormon

Posted by: Jeff   in About Me, Personal Thoughts, Religion

No, I’m not making an LDS version of I am Legend (though I’m curious what that would even be… Any thoughts?), but I want to do a better at being a bit more vocal about who I am and what I believe. One of my friends did a pretty good job, and other than posting my testimony of The Book of Mormon on here, I haven’t done a lot myself to stand up for my faith… No worries, I’m not going to be doing any preaching to try and convert everyone I see, but there are plenty of people out there that have misconceptions about what I believe and so I guess I’m responding to that more than anything else.

What surprises me is that there is such animosity toward members of the LDS Church and that it is OK in the public sector to say whatever you want about us. I thought this article was particularly interesting (and yes, it’s written by someone who is LDS). I was shocked at the attacks people made on Mitt Romney throughout the Republican primaries, and I’m really sad to see him out of the race - he is by far the best republican candidate on paper. Honestly, he’s one of only a couple people I would feel comfortable voting for (McCain and Obama are NOT on that short list by the way).

I’m not trying to talk about politics, but rather my feeling that the United States is full of hypocrites. We love to pontificate about the importance of being open minded to homosexuality, different races, foreign religions, etc…; but the nation refuses to respect a group of over 6 million American people who live by their faith in what many scholars proclaim to be a truly American Religion. This doesn’t even seem like a stretch, to be perfectly honest - we’re talking about American people who live clean cut lives, that are general good members of the community, and that are some of the first to respond with humanitarian aid in an emergency. What’s the problem?

Well, people don’t like to be bugged by LDS missionaries, and some member of the LDS Church are pretty obnoxious when it comes to sharing their faith - but aren’t a lot of other religions like that as well? I’m OK with LDS missionary jokes on occasion, because I can see how that is obnoxious to some people, but what’s with the straight hatred?

OK, so you don’t agree with our beliefs, but who cares? Just because Mormons believe that God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three distinct and separate beings that are one in purpose rather than one in physical form does not mean that we are less Christian than the next person. In fact, the LDS Church is only one of many Christian groups that believe in that same doctrine!

Again, I’m not trying to argue specific points of doctrine, rather I hope to point out how ridiculous the prejudice is when you consider that we are pretty much your prototypical Americans. Yeah, we do some things differently (e.g. we don’t drink alcohol or smoke), and we certainly are cheesy when it comes to family time, but does that make us ripe for ridicule in the public square? Does that make us un-American?

If we are so concerned about being an open and accepting society, why are most Americans playing the role of hypocrite when it comes to LDS folks? Going back to the election (and I’m totally stealing this from the article I referenced above), we have a black man, a woman, a baptist, and a Mormon that were all running in the primaries… Do we hear much criticism of the black man? Goodness no! Have I been called sexist for suggesting Hillary would be a bad chose because I disagree with her politics? Oh yeah! Do we make fun of the former baptist minister who says his religion defines him? No, no, no!

What about the Mormon? Well, he’s weird…

On this past Fourth of July I stood up and proclaimed myself to be proud to be an American - but that doesn’t mean I don’t think we have a lot of room for improvement.

Essential Mac Software

Posted by: Jeff   in Cool Technology, Hobbies

So, I wrote this up in an email for Jason and I realized that I might as well post it since I had typed it up anyway…

I’ve been playing with stuff the last week to get all of my good software and such installed on the Mac, and here’s the list of what I would call essential:

  • NewsFire - best RSS reader in life… SO GOOD! It’s really simple and it makes life pretty easy for me since it’s not integrated and messy like some other RSS readers. I should have gone with something like this a while ago.
  • Transmission - super simple and nice BitTorrent client. Azureus had me messing with settings for at least 30 minutes to get all the encryption and everything I wanted setup, this came with the best setting pre-done and without all the stupid bloated code in the program. Simple and clean!
  • Adium - THE best chat client I’ve ever used - ever! The only thing it lacks is video chat capability, which I can load iChat up for on the random occasions when I want to do that. Seriously though, it incorporates every other chat protocol I have ever heard of with the exception of Skype, which I hate anyway. I need to figure out some of the plug-ins and such (haven’t messed with it yet), but it’s great already… AND they’ll be adding Facebook Chat support in the next release (doesn’t quite work in the beta), which I think is hilarious and cool.
  • Camino - kills Firefox in almost all respects other than themes and add-ons (which I really didn’t use other than IE tab, which doesn’t matter on a mac) - I do have firefox for a couple random BYU sites that don’t render in Camino (which makes NO sense but I just didn’t bother uninstalling firefox before I went with Camino, so I just use it since it’s there). Anyway, I really like it for it’s clean look and OS X keychain support.
  • AppDelete - Most effective uninstall prog I’ve seen. I know you just need to delete the executable, but this deletes any random settings or libraries that install with your install prog. I was suprised when I used it the first time to see what I was missing in my normal uninstalls. (There is a $5 donation required after you use it a certain number of times - but it’s definitely worth the $5)
  • Caffeine - makes me happy because I can avoid my computer going to sleep when it should be downloading. Plus, it runs on the tray (top of the screen) and makes turning it on and off pretty easy.
  • Cyberduck - I like it for ftp, cause it’s pretty simple and easy to use… You may have another preference, but it makes me happy that it is simple.
  • Handbrake - great for ripping movies to the iPod, PSP, or other things. Pretty fast actually!
  • Jomic - BEST comic reader other than CDisplay, but CDisplay is windows only (sadness of my life, trust me).
  • Alarm Clock 2 - I have my computer in my room (I’m at college and can’t do much else since everyone else will complain I’m taking over the living area), and I thought having an alarm clock that would bring my computer out of sleep and play some wake up music would be GREAT - thus Alarm Clock 2.
  • VLC - goes without saying, but it’s a million times better than Quicktime. Besides, I swore off Quicktime in the 90’s, and I don’t wanna disappoint myself at this age.

Anyway, there are a ton of others that are “required” such as VMWare Fusion and a Boot Camp partition of Windows, but those should go without saying. Let me know if you’ve got something else I should try!

Inspiring/Jealousy Inducing Video

Posted by: Jeff   in Religion, Social

So, this video was passed through the I Sys list today, and it is quite possibly the greatest video I have seen in forever. Not only am I incredibly jealous of this guy and his amazing experience traveling the world, but I think there is a fun message about humanity and coming together as human beings.

I know that sounds cheesy, and that’s what Jared Vanderhorst said when he sent out the email with the link to this video, but I felt pretty inspired by how we are all the same even though we live in such different places across the world. It’s things like this that help me feel more of a connection with others around the world and truly see that we are all children of God. Seriously, this video kinda made me tear up a little… Haha! How lame am I?!

Anyway, on to the video, eh?

And I really need to get some posts up about the glory of my new computer… It’s the best thing I’ve purchased for myself in a LONG time!

Oh, and if anyway is willing to donate a few dollars to my art collection fund - let me know! :)
